India's Struggle for Independence: A Journey to Freedom

Early Nationalist Movement (1857-1905)

The Indian Rebellion of 1857, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny, was the first major uprising against British rule in India.

The Indian National Congress (INC) was founded in 1885 by A.O. Hume, a British civil servant, to promote Indian interests and demands.

Early nationalist leaders like Dadabhai Naoroji, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak advocated for greater autonomy and self-rule.

Gandhi and Non-Violent Resistance (1905-1947)

Mahatma Gandhi returned to India in 1915 and became the leader of the Indian independence movement.

Gandhi's philosophy of non-violent resistance, or satyagraha, inspired millions of Indians to participate in the freedom struggle.

The Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-1922), the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-1934), and the Quit India Movement (1942-1944) were some of the key campaigns led by Gandhi.

Subhas Chandra Bose, a radical nationalist, formed the Indian National Army (INA) to fight against British rule.

The Indian Navy Mutiny of 1946, also known as the RIN Mutiny, was a significant event in which Indian sailors in the Royal Indian Navy revolted against British rule.

The Partition of India in 1947, which led to the creation of Pakistan, was a traumatic event that resulted in widespread violence and displacement.

August 15, 1947: India gains independence from British rule.

January 26, 1950: The Constitution of India comes into effect, making India a sovereign republic.
