US Acknowledges Sheikh Hasina's Fourth Term as Prime Minister

In a recent development, the United States has dismissed any notion of not recognizing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's fourth consecutive term. This clarification came during a regular briefing at the US Department of State on January 18, 2024.

Encouraging Accountability and Transparency

Miller further elaborated that the US is currently encouraging the government of Bangladesh to investigate the reports of violence credibly and transparently, and to hold the perpetrators accountable. He urged all parties to reject political violence.

Concerns Over Arrests and Irregularities

The US remains concerned about the arrest of political opposition members and the reports of irregularities on election day. Miller expressed regret that not all parties participated in the elections and condemned the violence that occurred during the elections and in the months leading up to it.

Looking Forward to Collaboration

On a related note, US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Peter Haas, had a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday. They discussed how the two countries would work together on issues of mutual importance such as climate change, business opportunities, and the Rohingya crisis. Haas expressed his eagerness to work closely in the coming months to advance relations based on mutual interest.

This recent development signifies the US's stance on Bangladesh's political scenario and its commitment to fostering a relationship based on mutual respect and shared interests.
