Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud on Brutal Suppression of Protesters in the US

Referring to the recent incidents of brutality against pro-Palestinian protesters on US campuses, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud expressed his surprise and concern over the treatment of demonstrators in the United States.

During a press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hasan Mahmud highlighted the contrast in reactions between incidents in Bangladesh and the US. He noted that in Bangladesh, statements are promptly issued in response to incidents such as the assault on a mayoral candidate or the punching of individuals like Hero Alam and the brother of Charmonai Peer.

Expressing his astonishment, Hasan Mahmud mentioned that more than 2000 students have been arrested in the US, with even teachers facing violence. He questioned the response of authorities in the US and emphasized the severity of the situation, particularly citing a case where a teacher's rib cage was broken during the crackdown on protesters.

Hasan Mahmud further discussed the global outcry against violence, highlighting protests across Europe and underscoring the importance of protecting innocent lives, including children and women, from harm.

At the recent OIC Summit in Banjul, Hasan Mahmud reiterated Bangladesh's call for an immediate cessation of the conflict in Palestine. He urged for humanitarian access and emphasized the need for holding Israel accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Additionally, Bangladesh, along with other nations, has requested the International Criminal Court to investigate the situation in the State of Palestine. Hasan Mahmud stressed the importance of accountability and punishment to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, allowing people to live peacefully in their own land.
